This Friday September 23rd
5pm - 11pm
The Doorway Gallery , 24 South Frederick Street, Dublin 2 are delighted to take part in this year’s culture night on Friday September 23rd  between 5- 11 pm.  Dublin culture night 2011 is a chance to go on a journey of endless possibilities and surprises, and it’s all free of charge and open late! This year Dublin culture Night includes even more cultural and artistic attractions for you and your family to explore and enjoy. The Doorway Gallery has a fantastic line-up and will guarantee a night to remember.
Roisin O’Farrell is the featured artist for culture night and her exhibition called ‘Character’s in their own Story’ portrays a quiet place where life and characters are also being represented. Although there is variation in each painting of the series, the scenes are all interior, where the main character is depicted by an empty chair. A moment in time, a quietness, that is detached from the typical busy day, is clearly relevant in each piece. That moment of undisturbed tranquility before dawn break or of the silence left behind when a party has retired to another room. In the absence of the characters, now a distant vision, the chairs in the painting appear to come to life, and want to become characters in their own story.
Rosin O’Farrell and many other artists will be taking part in culture night at The Doorway Gallery. Well established artists such Padraig McCaul and Kevin McSherry and also Roisin herself will be doing live demonstrations in the gallery window all evening. Also featuring in the gallery is Ireland’s leading celebrity cartoonist, Niall O’Loughlin, who will be drawing free caricatures all evening. It is a great way to meet your favourite artists and see how they start and finish their masterpieces and even better to have your own personal drawing to take home!
The bottom of South Frederick Street will be closed off for the evening (Access to Setanta car park is still available) and a marquee will be visible on the road which will host the main feature for culture night, The Dr. Sketchy’s Anti Art School. When many artists think "life drawing," they think of sterile rooms, bad lighting, and bored, silent, models with nary a hint of personality. Dr. Sketchy’s is the world’s premier alternative drawing movement. Started by Molly Crabapple, an artist and former model, as an alternative to the dull drawing classes she had posed for, Dr.Sketchy’s has exploded into an international phenomenon. The tables are turned, as between poses the models interact with the artists and attendees, selecting their favorite images, or best competition entries to award prizes such as shots of alcohol or cupcakes. Each act will change during the evening and will include The Sedettes (Dance Troupe), The Orchids (Tribal Fusion Bellydance and Fierce (AcroBalance/ Fire Performer) and 'fresh from a massively successful Absolut Fringe debut with her aerial group, PaperDolls, Blackbird will entice and bewitch with her neo-burlesque performances.'which will make the night a very exciting and fun night!
Also taking part in the evening are ‘MaSamba band’ which will parade from Grafton Street to South Frederick Street and The Brewbaker Café will turn their café onto the Street and serve their delicious Stir fry Noodles for anyone who wishes to purchase them! Georges Wine Bistro and Dunne and Crescenzi all offer the usual delights of the area. With the launch of ‘Tin Tin’ the movie next month, International Books on South Frederick Street have a surprise for all Tin Tin fans – not to be missed! Also popular artist Graham Knuttel, will have his sculpture’s placed all along the street for everyone to enjoy. Gormley’s Art Gallery and the Leinster Gallery will be taking part on the night - With a night packed with culture, South Frederick Street is a must see on September 23rd .
