This exhibition draws on portraits of notable women found in the collection of Dublin City Gallery, The Hugh Lane and features a selection of works by artists such as Philip de László, George Frederic Watts, John Singer Sargent, Giovanni Boldini, William Orpen, Antonio Mancini, James McNeill Whistler, Sarah Purser, Augustus John, Jacob Epstein, John Lavery and Maurice de Vlaminck. The sitters include numerous individuals connected with the arts, politics, industry, sports and fashionable society, with striking images of, amongst others, Lady Gregory, Maud Gonne, Lady Mary Heath, Lady Charles Beresford, Hazel Lavery, Iris Tree and Clementina Anstruther Thomson. The links between many of the artists and sitters are explored, and the works, spanning some 80 years, showcase the broad variety of art created during this time. Women of Substance celebrates the parts these women played in society, and challenges preconceptions of the role of women at a time of great social change when new possibilities for women became available.
This exhibition is a real experience for those of us who enjoy our history, our culture and our flirtation with art. I enjoyed getting close to the paintings of these most magnificent women and viewing the richness of the paint work, the strokes of the brush and the elegance of yester year. This exhibition is exciting and tantalising; I finally viewed the famous Hazel Lavery painting for the first time having admired it so many times in so many scholarly books.
The Hugh Lane Gallery is FREE, to view a time in history and to become consumed by breath taking images all you have to do is step through the door of this incredible gift to the Irish people.
